HOLLIS WOMAN’S CLUB GENERAL MEETING

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

 

Call to order by president Kaaren Eastman at 12:05 PM.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance and the Collect for Women were led by Susan Benz.

 

Thanks were extended to Susan Durham and her committee for today’s hospitality.

 

New member Kelly Callahan was introduced and welcomed to the Club by Susan Benz.

 

Minutes of the  meeting of March 9, 2005 are available for review on the Club’s website.

 

Treasurer’s report was available for review at the meeting..

 

Ways and Means Report: packs of Hollis note-cards will remain available at the May meeting and at the Festivals, for a price of $8.00.

 

Correspondence:  Andrea Seddon read a thank-you note from Doris Rafferty for the flowers and cards after her recent surgery, and a thank-you from the family of Maura McCartney.

Announcements
of upcoming activities were made, and a schedule will be available on the website.

 

Announcement by Kaaren Eastman of a proposed new committee: At the last Board meeting Lorie Ball proposed a “Volunteerism” Committee which would coordinate and publicize to the Club the availability of short-term volunteer opportunities, especially those related to women and children.  Anyone interested in helping with this committee should contact Lorie.

Betsy Cotton shared that there will be a fund-raising walk for mental health on June 11.

 

Announcement by Kaaren Eastman:  On March 18 there was a social gathering to welcome new members.  Board members and new members were present, and it was a successful event, which is recommended for repeat in future years.

 

Announcement by Kaaren Eastman  of memorial contributions:  A gift has been made in memory of Maura McCartney to a Nantucket Wildlife organization.  Discussion is underway on a donation in memory of Gail Jellison.

 

Announcement by Susan Benz:  There are still seats available on the June 11 bus trip to NYC.

 

 

 

 

Announcement by Lorie Ball: The Charity Ball to raise money for the Lawrence Barn will be on April 15.  Lorie offered thanks to the members of the Ball Committee, and encouraged members to participate as guests or helpers at the Ball, or by purchasing raffle tickets.  The event is already showing a profit of $17,000 available for donation to the Barn.

Kaaren extended thanks to Lorie and the Committee for an excellent job of planning and preparation.

 

OLD BUSINESS

1. Nominations:  The nominating committee (Chris Furman, Laurie Miller, and Trish Martin) presented a slate of officers for 2005 – 2006. Motion by Ginny Brooks, seconded by Cindi Robbins, to accept the proffered slate.  Motion passed.

2. ByLaws revisions:  The ByLaws Committee (Ginny Brooks, Doris Rafferty, Ann Shedd, Deb Szok, Bev Waitt) presented a proposed revision at the last two meetings.  Motion by Chris Furman, seconded by Andrea Seddon, to accept the proposed revision.  Passed.

 

3. Proposed Budget: The Budget Committee (Erika Cross-MacDonald, Kaaren Eastman, Virginia Martin, and Ginny Brooks) developed a proposed $7,750 budget for 2005 – 2006. This was presented at the March meeting.  Motion by Ann Shedd, seconded by Bev Waitt, to accept the proposed budget.  Passed.  

 

 

NEW BUSINESS

1. Memorial Day Parade: The Selectmen have issued an invitation for the Woman’s Club to march in the Memorial Day Parade on May 30 at 5:00 PM.  Anyone interested should contact Kaaren Eastman.

 

2. Community Events: 

Ann Shedd distributed a survey for the Hollis Social Library. 

Anne Siglin asked for volunteers to host a Hollis-Brookline Rotary exchange student for the  2005 – 2006  school year.  The student would be 15-1/2 to 18-1/2 years old, and probably from Spain or eastern Europe.  Anyone interested should contact Ellen Walker or any Rotary member.

 

3. Strawberry Festival, June 26:  The event will be chaired by Lynn Wolaver and Kathleen Barnes.  Many volunteers are still needed.

 

4.  Apple Festival:  The event will be chaired by Chris Furman and Denise Sheridan.

 

The next Board meeting will be at Lynn Wolaver’s home, at 9:00 on Wednesday, May 4, 2005.

 

The annual luncheon meeting will be at Bedford Village Inn on Wednesday, May 11, 2005.
